2.Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19
REFLECTIONS AND MEDITATIONS
Both readings speaks of righteousness and abounding in Glory. To serve God and others will be realized through responding to the truth of God and Christian love towards others. From the Gospel Jesus is teaching us to respect God's commandment because in it we find the expression of love of God and love of neighbor. Jesus in perfecting the law is giving a call to the Jewish authorities to practice what they taught. The law in itself was not bad, but those who enforced the law to their subjects were the ones made the law to appear as a burden to some. Jesus said that he came to perfect the law because by that time, it appeared that man was there purposely to serve the law, instead of the law to cater for man's well being. The law forgot its purpose, that is to make the love of God known to the others, instead the law became the burden. Jesus was to perfect the law because the law ignored some important matters, matters that seemed to be small affair but before the eyes of God were of great importance, example people who were ignored because of their religious, tribal and political affiliations before the law according to the Jewish understanding was lawful, yet before the eyes of God was not lawful, because this neglected the love of the neighbor. For this reason, we cannot convince God by words alone, but yet we need to speak to him by words and deeds.
